IEEE AP/S Student Design Competition

Challenge: Build and design a system that utilizes a nanoVNA to demonstrate flexible, robust on-body antennas for communications, energy harvesting, and other applications.

Prizes: Win the opportunity to travel to the 2024 IEEE AP-S Symposium in Florence, Italy, and compete for cash awards. The top 6 teams will receive travel funds. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced at the conference and will receive cash awards of USD $1,500, $750, and $250, respectively.

Important Deadlines:

  • Preliminary Design Submission: December 31, 2023
  • Final Design Submission: May 20, 2024


  • Teams of 2 to 5 students
  • At least 50% undergraduate students
  • Supervised by a professional mentor who is an IEEE AP-S member

Support from EMG at Prince Sultan University:

  • Comprehensive support by EMG, including access to simulation tools and hands-on experience.
  • The nanoVNA required for the competition is available at EMG.

Application and Review Process:

  • Submit a preliminary design by December 31, 2023.
  • Six semi-finalist teams selected by January 20, 2024, will receive USD $1,500 each to build and test their designs.
  • Final design submission by May 20, 2024, including a video demonstration, step-by-step instructions, and a final report.

Judging Criteria:

  • Creativity and justification of the design.
  • Practical application of on-body antennas.
  • Quality of experimental setup and results.
  • Educational value and clarity of instructions.
